Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Public Health (Full Time)

  • A graduate of this university or another university recognized by the University of Lagos Senate who has obtained the degree of the Master of Philosophy may be admitted as a candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy.
  • (2) A graduate of this university or another university recognized by the University of Lagos Senate who has obtained an appropriate Master’s degree by coursework with a CGPA of at least 4.0 in the grading system after the 1990/91 session is eligible for admission.
  • (3) For M.Phil./Ph.D. programs, admission will only be processed at the beginning of each semester.
  • (4) Candidates must confirm the availability of supervisors with the department before applying.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Accounting

  • M.Sc./M.Phil. degree in accounting with a minimum GPA of 4.00 from the University of Lagos or any other recognized University.
  • Membership of a recognized professional accounting body will be an advantage.
  • Candidates will be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Adult Education

  • M.Ed./M.Phil. degree in Adult Education with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 from the University of Lagos or any other recognized University.
  • Candidate may also be required to satisfy the department in a selection process.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in African & Diaspora Studies

  • Candidates who have already obtained an M.Phil. in African and Diaspora Studies or the equivalent from the University of Lagos or any other recognized university.
  • Candidates with M.A. in African and Diaspora Studies or related disciplines with a minimum CGPA of 4.00. Candidates must have obtained a bachelor’s degree as specified for the master’s admission requirement.
  • Candidates with M.Phil. in African and Diaspora Studies can convert to the Ph.D. programme after coursework with a minimum CGPA of 4.00.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Anatomy

  • Master’s degree in Anatomy (M.Sc.)with a minimum CGPA of 4.O
  • Candidates for Ph.D. programme may be required to satisfy the Department in an interview or examination or both.
  • Master’s degree in Anatomy (M.Sc.) with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 for admission into M. Phil. and subsequent conversion into Ph.D.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Applied Entomology & Pest Management

  • M.Sc./M.Phil. in Biological Sciences, Life Sciences and related disciplines with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its equivalent from the University of Lagos or any other recognized University.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Architecture

  • Master’s degree in Architecture with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its equivalent from the University of Lagos or any other recognized University; or
  • Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in Architecture with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its equivalent from the University or any other recognized University.
  • Satisfy all existing requirements of the regulations of the School of Postgraduate Studies.
  • Master of Architecture (M.Arch. Post-Professional) degree with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its equivalent from the University of Lagos or any other recognized University.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Bio-Pharmacy

  • M.Sc. or M.Phil in Biopharmacy from this or another recognized university with a GPA of 4.0 and above;
  • M.Sc. or M.Phil in any relevant Pharmaceutical Science from this or another recognized university with a GPA of 4.0 and above;
  • Sc. or M.Phil in Clinical Pharmacy from this or another recognized university with a GPA of 4.0 and above;
  • Any other approved equivalent qualification.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biochemistry

  • Candidates must satisfy a minimum of 6 units from the 900-level courses, which must include the research seminar course for Ph.D.
  • Candidates must satisfy all other conditions stipulated in the regulations of the Postgraduate School.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biology Education

  • M.Ed./M.Phil. in Science Education and Mathematics Education with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 from the University of Lagos or any other recognized University.
  • Candidates may be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Botany

  • candidate with an M.Phil. degree from this or another approved university, or an equivalent qualification, passing a minimum of six and a maximum of 12 units.
  • Meeting all other existing requirements of the School of Postgraduate Studies.
  • The Ph.D. programme is open only to candidates having an M.Phil or equivalent qualification in Botany or related subject.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Business Education

  • M.Phil. degree or its equivalent in Arts & Social Sciences Education courses with a minimum GPA of 4.00 from the University of Lagos or any other recognized University

  • Master’s degree in Arts & Social Sciences Education subjects with a minimum GPA of 4.00 from the University of Lagos or any other recognized University.

  • Candidates for Ph.D. Programme may be required to satisfy the Departmental selection before admission.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Civil & Environmental Engineering (Geotechnics Option)

Only a candidates who possess a PGD with a GPA of 3.50 from the University of Lagos or a first degree with honours in Civil Engineering or equivalent from the University of Lagos or from other approved Universities, will be considered for admission into the M.Sc. programme. For admission into the M.Phil. programme, candidates must have a first degree with at least a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours or an M.Sc. degree with a GPAof 3.50. Admission into the Ph.D. programme requires a master’s degree with a GPA of 4.00. Candidates may also have to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Civil & Environmental Engineering (Highways & Traffic Option)

Only a candidates who possess a PGD with a GPA of 3.50 from the University of Lagos or a first degree with honours in Civil Engineering or equivalent from the University of Lagos or from other approved Universities, will be considered for admission into the M.Sc. programme. For admission into the M.Phil. programme, candidates must have a first degree with at least a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours or an M.Sc. degree with a GPAof 3.50. Admission into the Ph.D. programme requires a master’s degree with a GPA of 4.00. Candidates may also have to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Civil & Environmental Engineering (Structures Option)

Only a candidates who possess a PGD with a GPA of 3.50 from the University of Lagos or a first degree with honours in Civil Engineering or equivalent from the University of Lagos or from other approved Universities, will be considered for admission into the M.Sc. programme. For admission into the M.Phil. programme, candidates must have a first degree with at least a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours or an M.Sc. degree with a GPAof 3.50. Admission into the Ph.D. programme requires a master’s degree with a GPA of 4.00. Candidates may also have to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Civil & Environmental Engineering (Water Resources Option)

Only a candidates who possess a PGD with a GPA of 3.50 from the University of Lagos or a first degree with honours in Civil Engineering or equivalent from the University of Lagos or from other approved Universities, will be considered for admission into the M.Sc. programme. For admission into the M.Phil. programme, candidates must have a first degree with at least a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours or an M.Sc. degree with a GPAof 3.50. Admission into the Ph.D. programme requires a master’s degree with a GPA of 4.00. Candidates may also have to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Chemistry & Molecular Diagnosis

  • M.Sc. / M.Phil. degree in Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnosis with minimum CGPA of 4.00 from the University of Lagos or any other approved University.
  • Candidates may be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Pathology

  • An M.Phil degree in clinical Pathology, Chemical Pathology and in addition have obtained an MB.BS degree of the University of Lagos or other medical degree recognised by Senate.

  • Satisfy all other requirements stipulated in the University Postgraduate Regulations.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Pharmacy

  • M.Sc. or M.Phil, in Clinical Pharmacy of this or other recognized University with GPAof 4.0 and above.

  • Any other approved equivalent qualification.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Commercial and Industrial Law

  • The Phd programme is open to only candidate having an m.phil degree in Law of its equivalent , of the University of Lagos or any other recognized University.

  • Candidates for the M.phil, programmes and those for the PhD programme may be required to satisfy a selection process.

  • M.Sc. degree with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its equivalent in Building (in any of the specialized options: Construction Management, Construction Technology, Building Services, Building Maintenance Management, etc) from the University of Lagos or any other recognized University

  • Candidates may be required to go through selection process.
  • Special considerations may be given to Civil Engineers with M. Sc. Degree with CGPA
    of 4.0 and above for admission to the M. Phil. Engineering Geology & Geotechnics Option, provided he/she is prepared to undergo special remedial undergraduate courses for ONE SEMESTER (or more) before commencing the MPhil. degree programme.

Master of Philosophy in Biochemistry

Admission Requirement
M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry, Physiological Chemistry, Molecular Biology and Chemistry of this University or any other University recognized by Senate. B.Sc. Honours degree in Biochemistry obtained at least at the level of Second Class Upper division from the University of Lagos or any other University recognized by Senate. Candidate may be required to satisfy the Department in an interview or written examination or both.

Degree Requirements:

To obtain the M.Phil. degree:

(i) Candidates who hold the M.Sc. degree upon admission must satisfy a minimum of 6 units, including the research seminar, from the 900-level courses.

(ii) Candidates who hold the B.Sc. degree upon admission must satisfy a minimum of 30 units. This must include all the courses listed as compulsory at the 800-level except the project, as well as a minimum of 6 units from the 900-level courses, which must include the research seminar course for M.Phil.

(iii) Candidates must satisfy all other requirements stipulated in the regulations of the Postgraduate School.

The M.Phil. programme is open to candidates with either:
(a) A Bachelor’ s degree in Botany, Biology, Microbiology, and Agricultural Biology or any other related subjects with a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division) or  An M.Sc. in Botany or related subject, of this or any other approved University.
(b) The Ph.D. programme is open only to candidates having an M.Phil or equivalent qualification in Botany or related subject.

“The M.Phil. (Botany) degree may be obtained by:

(i) A candidate with a master’s degree by coursework from this or another approved university, or an equivalent qualification, passing a minimum of six but not more than 12 units.

(ii) A candidate with the appropriate Bachelor’s degree from this or another approved university, passing a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 42 units.

(iii) All candidates must satisfy all other requirements of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

The programme is open to candidates with:

The programme is open to candidates with:

(a) Bachelor’s degree with minimum of Second Class Lower or its equivalent in Biology, Biology Education, Botany, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Zoology, Anatomy, Physiology, medical laboratory science, pharmacy, nursing and Marine Biology from the University of Lagos or any recognised University; or

(c) A PGD degree of the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics with minimum CGPA of 3.00 provided such candidates have an honours degree in related Science courses.

Master of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
(1) The M.Phil. programme shall be open to candidates having:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering with a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division).
  • A good M.Sc. (CGPA 3.50 or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lagos or any other approved university.

(2) The Ph.D. program shall be open only to candidates with an M.Phil. or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, and to candidates with an M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering and a CGPA of 4.00 from the University of Lagos or any other approved university.

(3) Candidates for either the M.Phil. or Ph.D. program may be required to undergo a selection process.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

To obtain an M.Phil. in Chemical Engineering, unless the student already has an M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering and therefore requires only a minimum of six units at the 900-level, a candidate must:

  • (1) Satisfy a minimum of 36 units, as follows:
    20 units of compulsory courses;
    6 units from optional courses;
    4 units of “Selected Topics in Current Chemical Engineering Research”;
    6 units of “Research Seminars” courses at the 900-level.
  • (2) Fulfill all other existing requirements as stipulated in the Regulations of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

Only a candidates who possess a PGD with a GPA of 3.50 from the University of Lagos or a first degree with honours in Civil Engineering or equivalent from the University of Lagos or from other approved Universities, will be considered for admission into the M.Sc. programme. For admission into the M.Phil. programme, candidates must have a first

Master of Philosophy in Civil & Environmental Engineering (Structures Option)

Only a candidates who possess a PGD with a GPA of 3.50 from the University of Lagos or a first degree with honours in Civil Engineering or equivalent from the University of Lagos or from other approved Universities, will be considered for admission into the M.Sc. programme. For admission into the M.Phil. programme, candidates must have a first
degree with at least a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours or an M.Sc. degree with a GPA of 3.50. Admission into the Ph.D. programme requires a master’s degree with a GPA of 4.00. Candidates may also have to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

Master of Philosophy in Civil & Environmental Engineering (Water Resources Option)

Only a candidates who possess a PGD with a GPA of 3.50 from the University of Lagos or a first degree with honours in Civil Engineering or equivalent from the University of Lagos or from other approved Universities, will be considered for admission into the M.Sc. programme. For admission into the M.Phil. programme, candidates must have a first degree with at least a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours or an M.Sc. degree with a GPA of 3.50. Master of Philosophy in Clinical Chemistry & Molecular Diagnosis

The programme is open to candidates with:

(a) Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) (Chemical Pathology) or its equivalent such as Associate of Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria (AIMLS) (Chemical Pathology), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, and other relevant degree with minimum of Second-Class Upper from the University of Lagos or other approved Universities.

(b) M.Sc. degree in Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnosis of this University or any other approved University with minimum CGPA of 3.50.

(c) M.Sc. degree in other relevant disciplines especially Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of this University or any other approved University with minimum CGPA of 3.50.

Master of Philosophy in Clinical Pathology

The programme shall be open to candidates who possess:
(i) a. An M.Sc. degree in Clinical Pathology or Chemical Pathology. b. An MB. BS degree of the University of Lagos or other medical degree recognised by Senate and in addition have a Bachelor of Science degree with a minimum of a Second-Class Upper degree in Clinical Pathology, Biochemistry or Physiology

PGD in Biomedical Engineering Full-time Requirements

(i) Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Lagos or any other approved university in the following disciplines: Physics, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Medical Sciences. Candidates with other qualifications approved by the Senate of the University of Lagos are also eligible.                                                                                                                                (ii) Candidates with an HND in Biomedical Engineering from the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University of Lagos, along with 10 years of cognate experience in Biomedical Engineering practice, are eligible.                                                                                               

(iii) Candidates must satisfy all requirements as stipulated by the School of Postgraduate Studies of the University of Lagos. 
(iv) Candidates will be required to undergo a selection process.                                                                                                                              (v) For the award of Postgraduate Diploma candidates must take and pass a minimum of 26 units.

The Department started in 1965 with initial programmes for the teaching of major Nigerian languages to non-native speakers under the proposed Division of African Languages. The motivation was provided by a lecturer in Yorùbá, Dr. Adeboye Babalola (The Late Emeritus Professor of African Languages and Literatures).

Christian Religious Studies

Religious education commenced in the then Department Curriculum of Studies, Faculty of Education some decades ago. In view of the fact that religious studies as a broad discipline was not taught as a school subject, the Department decide to introduce the B.A. (Hons) Ed. Christian Religious Studies and the B.A. (Hons) Ed. Islamic Religious Studies which replaced the B.A. (Hons) Ed. Religious Studies. In 2005 when the Department Curriculum of Studies was split into two, the two programmes came under the Department of Arts & Social Sciences Education. Considering the need for an extensive and intensive study of religion beyond its limited utilities in the school system, the Senate of the University of Lagos on 2016 approved the establishment of the Department of Religious Studies in the Faculty of Arts. The following two academic programmes were also approved to be run under the new department: Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) Degree in Christian Studies and Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) Degree in Islamic Studies.

The Department of Creative Arts offers B.A. (Hons) Degree in Creative Arts with options in Music, Theatre Arts and Visual Arts. The average number of credit units designed for student graduation is 148 Credit Units. The general courses’ code is identified with the symbol CRA, Music with MUS, Theatre Arts with THA while Visual Arts courses are identified with the symbol VSA. Concentration in each area of the four-year programme starts in the second year. The courses are distributed into Core, Required and Elective. At the end of the third year, students are expected to proceed for between two to three months, on Student Industrial Work Experience (SIWES). This carries two credit units.

Concentration in each area of the four-year programme starts in the second year. The courses are distributed into Core, Required and Elective. Islamic Studies

Bachelor of Arts (Hon)

Religious education commenced in the then Department Curriculum of Studies, Faculty of Education some decades ago. In view of the fact that religious studies as a broad discipline was not taught as a school subject, the Department decide to introduce the B.A. (Hons) Ed. Christian Religious Studies and the B.A. (Hons) Ed. Islamic Religious Studies which replaced the B.A. (Hons) Ed. Religious Studies. In 2005 when the Department Curriculum of Studies was split into two, the two programmes came under the Department of Arts & Social Sciences Education. Considering the need for an extensive and intensive study of religion beyond its limited utilities in the school system, the Senate of the University of Lagos on 2016 approved the establishment of the Department of Religious Studies in the Faculty of Arts. The following two academic programmes were also approved to be run under the new department: Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) Degree in Christian Studies and Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) Degree in Islamic Studies.

Medical Laboratory Science

The Department started as a unit of the department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology was created in the year 2009 at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos. The Program shall award the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) degree. The World Health Organization gave a directive in 1984 that all Health Professionals should have a degree as their basic qualification by the year 2000 and advised all Teaching Hospitals running Diploma Programs to evolve by instituting the degree program in their degree awarding sister institutions. Programme shall award the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) degree.

Programme was endorsed by the University of Lagos over 12 years ago. The Senate meeting of 28 March, 2007 in her paper 3955 (k) gave legal and academic teeth to the establishment of the social work programme under the Department of Sociology. The admission quota then was 30. There were just two students admitted to the first session (2007/2008 session). The programme metamorphosed into a Unit but was still operating under the administrative structure and ambit of Sociology Department and coordinated by Dr. C.R. Nwanna till July 31, 2018.

Bachelor of Science (Hon)

The Department was established in 1967, five years after the enabling Act that established the University was promulgated. Reverend Father J. B. Schuyller, Ph.D. became its first Head of Department while a crop of other notable scholars joined the faculty thereafter. Some of these were Professors Olatunde Oloko, Oladejo Okediji, P.O Olusanya, and Dr. M.I. Iro and Academician Oberu Aribiah. The vision of the founding fathers of the Department was to establish a Sociology Department where young sociologists would be trained to accomplish the goals of social transformation of society and as Professor Schuyler would say, “to put it to reverse the disenchantment of the universe’’.

Urban & Regional Planning

Bachelor of Arts (Hon)

The Department of Creative Arts offers B.A. (Hons) Degree in Creative Arts with options in Music, Theatre Arts and Visual Arts. The average number of credit units designed for student graduation is 148 Credit Units. The general courses’ code is identified with the symbol CRA, Music with MUS, Theatre Arts with THA while Visual Arts courses are identified with the symbol VSA. Concentration in each area of the four-year programme starts in the second year. The courses are distributed into Core, Required and Elective. At the end of the third year, students are expected to proceed for between two to three months, on Student Industrial Work Experience (SIWES). This carries two credit units.
